Dear viewer,
My name is Christian Rutherford, a current Freshman in the Class of 2026 at Davidson College, and I am from the tiny state of Rhode Island. I am a British-American dual citizen, though I can become eligible for Bermudian citizenship in the future. I enjoy listening to music, collecting things, playing GeoGuessr, cooking, and traveling, and I also wrestled here at Davidson. On the academic side of things, my interests lie in Computer Science, Physics, and Russian. My theme for this portfolio is “The Future of the Arts.” While not necessarily referring to any particular “art” discipline, I would consider “art” to include everything we know of and associate with music, dance, and visual arts – all forms of self-expression. I chose this theme following a newfound interest in art, one which began with a simple 100-level class in my fall semester. With this in mind, the changes that the arts may experience in the future, partially due to the existence and usage of artificial intelligence, are the primary focus of this portfolio.
The Humanities course offered at Davidson College is split between the Fall and Spring semesters, with Humanities 103 being taught in the former, and 104 being in the latter. In the Fall semester, the lectures every week were divided up between 7 professors, each coming from a unique background and having a diverse array of talents and expertise. This year, the Humanities course theme was selected to be “The Future,” and we have been discussing a variety of topics ranging from what the future is, who the future will include, when the future will be, the aesthetics and ethics of the future, and when the end of the future may be. Within this portfolio, you will find definitions that I came up with for the H/humanities and the Future, respectively, revising them over the course of both semesters. In addition to these, I have a number of other works from campus commentaries, a research paper, to Moodle posts, each being expanded upon since their original creation.
